Interview with middle distance medalists
Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:33

Dana BrožkováDana Brožková: "I am very surprised with this gold medal, because this is the first time I ran middle distance in world championships. In the whole year I didn't feel very well. I did everything as usual, but my shape was not good. I started to feel good only in the last 14 days, my training were getting better and better. On the start line today I felt, if I do a very good race, I can be in top 6. The course was very challenging, especially the beginning, I had to concentrate. This was a good start on WOC, I will start in relay and long distance too."

Marianne AndersenMarianne Andersen: "I made a small mistake (around 30 seconds), but otherwise I am really satisfied with my competition today. I was really close to gold, closer than any time before, I think I go on the right way. It would have been fantastic to win, but silver is not the worst thing that can happen. The course was about as I expected, I really liked it, it was challenging, the beginning was quite tricky. I'll try to do my best in long distance final too."

Simone NiggliSimone Niggli: "I feel great. This bronze medal is just like a gold for me, because I know I'm back in business. I missed on control no. 4. about two minutes, I thought Marianne will catch me, but then I had a good run, physically on the top. I didn't expect to be among the best three, so I am surprised and happy. Before WOC I thought, I will have best chances in long distance, because there are just a few girls who can keep the speed for such a long time. So now I'm really happy that I have a medal already today. Now I have to recover for short distance, I'm trained and prepaired for it and we will meet the girls tomorrow."

Thierry GueorgiouThierry Gueorgiou: "This spring have been very difficult for me, not because I was struggling with trainings, trainings went very well, but in competitions I never managed to win. You have to win sometimes to get the good level of self-confidence. On the last World Cup in Norway it was awful. After that I decided to do very special preparation, and I went for three weeks to high altitude. I was training alone and I got back self-confidence. At the start I wasn't sure if I can do it, because it is getting more and more difficult, others are better and better in middle distance. But I knew that it was all about me, and it's very important to know at the start of the race, that if you compete well, you can do it. The terrain was not special for us, because we had a very good old map, so we knew what to expect. That's what I don't like in today's orienteering, that there are less and less surprises. If I compare this victory to the old ones, I have to say, every gold has its own story. This one I'll remember, because I had difficulties during the year, but I managed to win again. My favourite discipline is still middle, but I decided to win a gold in long in the next three years, so now I would like to focus on it. I don't plan to start in short in the future, because I won a title in short, and I feel I was lucky, and I couldn't win again."

Daniel HubmannDaniel Hubmann: "Today I'm happy with the silver medal, because this is my fisrt medal in middle distance. I'm also very happy with my performance today, right now I don't know where I lost this half minute to Thierry, so I'm happy. I wouldn't say, he's unbeatable, but today he was really strong again. It was more or less what we expected, but I think the runnability was not as good as we expected after some trainings in this area. The performance of the team (2nd, 3rd and 4th place) is amazing, we were well prepaired. It's always a challenge to make a good run, and today all of us did it, and now I'm really happy with the boys' performance. I will try to give my best tomorrow and hopefully fight for medals."

Matthias MerzMatthias Merz: "It's very nice. It was my goal to get a medal, that's what I achieved today with an almost clear race. I made small mistakes, but I can't say now how big they were. This terrain is similar to some terrains at home, and we had a good preparation. We were in a training camp on altitude on high level one month ago, and it was good for everyone, so the whole team looks in a good shape. Now it was a good start for this week, everybody's happy, the team spirit is good and all runners - including the ones, who hasn't started yet - are very motivated. I won't run tomorrow on short, so I take a rest for the relay."

As usual
Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:25

Six timesThierry Gueorgiou won world championship title in middle distance sixth time in histroy and third time in a row. He had best split time at each radio control, so there were no doubt about his victory. Daniel Hubmann tried everything to break the serie of the French, but the half minutes gap between them - which occured in the first part of the course - remained until finish line. Bronze medal went to Matthias Merz, who was better than Hubmann at the first radio control, but then half minutes gap was fixed between them. Matthias Mueller became fourth and Francoise Gonon fifth, so only two nations' runners shared the five best position. David Andersson on the sixth place was the best Scandinavian runner.

Dana Brožková world champion of middle distance
Wednesday, 19 August 2009 12:13

For the second timeDana Brožková of Czech Republic won in an exciting fight the middle distance final. In the best positions - as it was expected - we can find runners from the last part of the startlist. Brožková caught Helena Jansson and her sister, Radka (starting 2 and 4 minutes before her). Until that point she was already the fastest, but together they had such a high speed, that opponents couldn't keep. On spectators' control Minna Kauppi was 1'22", Simone Niggli 0'49" behind her. Marianne Andersen (starting second last) was the closest one with 24 seconds. She tried to get closer in the last loop, but on the last control she was still 10 seconds behind and it remained until the finish line. The fight for bronze was won by Simone Niggli, so title holder Minna Kauppi became forth, followed by Merja Rantanen and Helena Jansson.
