Runners in the forest are: Minna Kauppi, Simone Niggli, Helena Jansson, Marianne Andersen, Tatyana Ryabkina and Dana Brozkova, so still everything is possible.

Switzerland won men's relay
Friday, 21 August 2009 13:30

Switzerland world championA real drama took place in third leg: Andrey Khramov, Thierry Gueorgiou and Martin Johansson all made a mistake, so the leader changed several times. After that Thierry Gueorgiou, Anders Nordberg and Martin Johansson took the lead together, when the Swedish got an injury: a stick of wood went into his leg. His opponents stopped to help him, soon Michal Smola joined them, so they all gave up their positions. Meanwhile Matthias Merz - who didn't know anything about the accident - with a clear and fast run came up to first place from the eighth one (changing a 3:44 gap behind for a 2:24 lead). Hramov saved silver for Russia, but he has to give up jogging into the finish, because Mats Haldin and Edgars Bertuks got really close to him. They were fighting from the middle part of the course and caught the last control together, but the Finnish one was stronger and got the bronze. Behind Latvia (this was their best place in WOC history ever) arrived Ádám Kovács with a great run coming up eight positions. Sixth place went to Poland making surprise.

Men's relay started
Friday, 21 August 2009 11:00

Men's startAt 11:00 the first runners of men's relay started the course. The venue is the same like the middle distance final was. The weather is similar, or even gonna be hotter today. First runners' course is 5.960 m / 240 m / 17 cp., second and third runners' one is 8.720-8.760 m / 350 m / 22-23 cp., expected winning time 36+53+53=142 minutes.

The reigning world champion, Great Britain (first runner Matthew Speake) isn't a favourite, same like a year ago. The top favourite is Switzerland, their team dominated the finals so far, but they couldn't collect any gold until now. Russia (first runner Dmitry Tsvetkov), France (first runner Philippe Adamski) and Sweden (first runner Davis Andersson) have good chance for a medal. Further relays possibly getting into top 6 are: Czech Republik (frist runner Tomás Dlabaja), Latvia (first runner Martins Sirmais) and Hungary (first runner Csaba Gösswein).

Comments from medalists of sprint
Thursday, 20 August 2009 22:13

Helena Jansson: "Wow! I feel crazy and I feel stressed out, because I can think only of the relay tomorrow. My legs are tingling and I don't know if it's because of happyness or stress, but it doesn't matter. I had a really good race. At the beginning I focused only on myself and the course all the way. I made a small mistake, I ran into a fence and there was gate, but it was just a couple of seconds. I'm happy that could run so fast and win the gold medal. In the arena I didn't hear that I'm in such a big lead. The Swedish coaches told me to concentrate on orienteering and I thought I am in a good position. I knew I had a good race, but I didn't know, that so good. I am just really happy that I could show such a good performance on a world championships, because this is the biggest thing you can ever achieve. And the best thing that can happen is that on the second place there is another Swedish. Tomorrow I will run third leg, I am really interested in relay, because this is my favourite, competing together with the team is the best thing to do."

Linnea Gustafsson: "I am surprised with this silver medal. I had a good race, but I didn't think that it could be a silver. It was really fun in the zoo, there were animals and people. I will not run in relay tomorrow, only in long on Sunday."

Simone Niggli: "I am very proud of this bronze. My performance wasn't that perfect, I did some wrong route choices, especially to the second control, and I lost a lot of time. But then it was like yesterday, never give up, and it was worth. The part inside the zoo was tricky, and there were fans and animals around, and I ran into a dead-end. The course was challenging and various, we didn't know too much about the zoo area, because there was no map of it, altogether it was a nice sprint competition."

Andrey Khramov: "I am very happy! My favourite discipline is the sprint, but not the sprint in forest, so I am very glad that I could win even in forest. I had a very good run, good speed and almost clear run. I have two more races this week, in relay we're trying to be as good as possible, on long distance my only goal is to survive."

Fabian Hertner: "I'm feeling good with these two guys here. I am a little surprised, it wasn't my goal to win a medal, but now I did, so I'm very happy. I know since beginning of July that I will run sprint here. I had a good preparation in spring, and in June I had a lot of competition, and my shape went down, but after that I trained very well and I got better and better. I didn't have a clean race, I had some problems in the forest and I ran into a dead-end in the zoo. I have the biggest chance in sprint, but I like all disciplines, and wouldn't like to be a specialist. This was my only race in Hungary, because the Swiss team is really strong and it's very tough to qualify, so from now I'm only celebrating."

Daniel Hubmann: "I am quite happy with my race, I did the same mistake like Fabian, and there were some controls where I was unsure and maybe slower, but the rest was really good. The course was more or less what we expected, in the zoo it was tricky and challenging and funny, but the forest was like on our trainings and the qualification. I am confidence for tomorrow (I will run the second leg) and Sunday. Long distance is the race I really like, and I hope I will have another good result."

Swedish double at women
Thursday, 20 August 2009 18:35

The new world championHelena Jansson copied the victory of Khramov: she was ahead of opponents with 42 seconds. She took the lead at the beginning (close to half a minute gap) and didn't lose time after at all, so she won her first gold medal in WOC history. The second place both went for Sweden, Linnea Gustafsson also showed great performance. Same like yesterday Simone Niggli collected bronze again. Signe Soes became fourth; Kathryn Ewels made surprise with her fifth position; and Anni-Maija Fincke got a sixth place.

Andrey Khramov saved title in sprint
Thursday, 20 August 2009 17:29

Saved titleLast year's world champion, Andrey Khramov didn't have the best qualification, so he started in the middle of the list, but it didn't disturb him to have a great run: ha was beating the Swiss opponents with almost half a minute. He was followed by the young Fabian Hertner, who started last before and overtook team-mate Daniel Hubmann. The qualification's best runner - the last starter - Olav Lundanes (22 years old Norwegian) reached up to forth position. He was followed by Martin Johansson of Sweden in fifth and - making big surprise - Kiril Nikolov of Bulgaria in sixth place.
